Let’s ditch stereotypes about carers and older people

On the Helpcare project team we have been talking to professional carers and one item that came up was their job title. People complained that when they said their job was  ‘carer’ they hit stereotypes about the type of work they did and the level of skill required. No-one suggested renaming their job title though, which is the conclusion Ros Altman came to when considering how the term ‘old’ is used to generate negative images. Should we consider a new namefor professional carers to better reflect the professionalism of our care workforce? Read the full text of Ros Altmann’s article and get in touch with the Helpcare team if you have an opinion on this.
